Planter Boxes & Benches (Deck System)I started with preparing the Cypress, gluing the post parts together, and forming the mortises and grooves. Fitting the parts of the Planter Boxes together.
The boxes are coming together... (This is a dry-fit.)
Here are the completed boxes. I sanded the boxes and formed chamfers to ease the corners.
Now the bench parts are ready. Half-Laps on the corners and a slot to catch the bench slats.
And they comes together like this. (There's 2 benches total.)
This is a test fit of the benches to the boxes. Everything's OK and we're ready to finish.
The benches have been chamfered on the edges and the boxes were primed and painted a Hunter Green color. Then the benches were treated with a Teak Oil finish. So here is the Deck System.
All that's needed is 3 plastic containers and somebody to win. Update: 05/2008 The Teak Oil used to seal the benches failed. The Cypress changed color and it just had an ugly look to them. We also had one board that curved up and separated from the screw. That was fixed and the Teak Oil and resulting grit was sanded off and I used the same sealer as for the Garden Benches. Sikkens Cetol1. Benches with the new finish...
