Computer/AV Media Cabinets

This is what they had.  A store-bought cabinet system.  Note one door's off and the other is fixed in the open position.

First we start by cutting the plywood parts to size, then wrapping the edges with a hardwood trim.

The cabinets were assembled with a frame on the top, a stiff bottom shelf, and a stretcher.  The knock-outs and vents were form prior to assembly.  After assembly, the base trim was attached.  If you look at the cabinet on the right, You'll notice the slots for the adjustable shelf brackets.  That was formed prior to assembly with a plunge router, the router fence, and two jigs to give me the start and stop positions.

Now for the doors.  This was a challenge because 1/4" plywood that's finished on two sides is not easy to find around here.  So basically I made my own out of two 1/8" plywood and sized them up to fit the rail and stiles.  They were then mounted on the hinges and the handles attached.

With the doors opened, the shelves are in place, and the keyboard trays installed.  Two things to note: The keyboard tray has a roundover border to prevent a keyboard or even a laptop from sliding off the shelf. Also the adjustable shelf has shallow 1" wide holes that rest in the clips for the shelf supports.  That prevents them from sliding out or back behind the cabinet which may tip a monitor or cause a hard drive failure if the computer is on this shelf.  (This is where my "Day Job" pays off in the shop.  It is paramount that while the computer is running it is not jolted or bumped in any way.  That's why this shelf "locks".)

The finish was done with de-waxed orange colored shellac (1lb cut) and then a Candlelight oil base stain.  After that, I applied 3 coats of a oil urethane.

Doors open and out of the way.  You'll notice the door catches are simple clips, not magnetic which will cause slight problems with electronics.
