Barrister Bookcase Replacement Door
One of the very few Restoration Project that I've done (and the first one on furniture) was this Barrister Door. The owner had this Barrister Bookcase in his family for some time and has been a useful piece of furniture. (It's a complete case. I just borrowed the parts I needed.) However, one of the doors was missing. I was given the challenge to come up with a new door with the proper hardware and profile. Well... I couldn't do it all. A friend of mine who works with metal fabricated the hinges for the door, and another friend in Colorado milled the parts for the door with a knife set in his shaper that was a perfect match. However I did round-over the top, create a cove on the bottom of the door, machined a bead detail matching what was on the original door, and finally assembled the door. Since the knob on the original door didn't match pre-turned knobs available, I created a knob with the Lathe and miniature lathe tools. (First turning.) The finish was a challenge, but with a few experiments and couple of "What if we do this..." we got the finish down really close to the original. So... Which door is the new one? Hint: There's no label sticker on the new door. (1/2006) |
